The Vintage Look

Last month, during my visit to Montana, the Grandmothership pulled out a box of old baby clothes that originated with my sister and were then used again when I was born. The clothes totally cracked me up with their late 70s/early 80s style. Here are a few of the best vintage duds.

First we have the plaid pinafore.
(In case you were wondering how big Bella is these days, she's "SOOOO BIG!")

This dress is cute in it's own weird 80s way, if not a bit Little House on the Prairie-ish. However, it appears that we are either missing some frilly bottoms or the curse of the long torso has struck again.

Next we have the red corduroy bell bottoms.
We were going for an Elton John look, but Bella was being a bit of a baby about having to wear sunglasses AND a wig. Thus, this was the best shot I could get of her in her full get-up. (Windex? Wha?)
Finally, we have my favorite. This outfit put me into a fit of giggles when I first saw it, which confused my mom as all she could see when she looked at it was a cute baby outfit.
It's sort of sweet, really. Where I saw ridiculous red, quilted overalls with frilly straps and an embroidered chicken, my mom could only see the sweet memory of her own babies dressed up in the latest baby fashion. She honestly could not see why they were so funny. But how could an embroidered chicken not be funny?

Maybe I shouldn't have teased my mom so much about those quilted overalls. After all, I hardly keep Bella in the latest baby fashions. Take the other day for example. Here she is in some basic Carter's clothes.
I have the hardest time finding pants that fit her robust little figure (they are either too tight, but a good length or they fit around her waist and are ridiculously long), so she often has to wear these silly loose stretchy pants. Seriously - we have yet to find a pair of jeans that fit. Anyhoo, on this particular day we were about to go outside, so I added a sweatshirt to her outfit.
I see some of you saying, "What's the big deal? Those clothes look normal to me."

What's the big deal? Look again at the outfits. Do those outfits remind you of anyone? Or maybe I should ask if it reminds you of any particular generation? The matchy-matchy shirt and loose pants? Or the two-tone look that is reminiscent of Easter eggs? Do you see it?

YES! I'VE BEEN DRESSING MY CHILD LIKE A GOLDEN GIRL.
Geriatric chic works well on my own Grandma, but not so much on my baby. Maybe the red chicken outfit is not so bad after all? At least it's a little bit more age appropriate.

  2. I buy my sister the cutest little outfits for my niece yet all she ever puts her in are Chirco stretch pants (the Carter's a la Wal-Mart brand). It burns me, I tell ya.

But on the other hand, if I could get away with wearing stetch pants every day, all day I'd totally do it. So maybe Bella's onto something ...

  4. We buy Brady (from consignment stores- or we get them for gifts) Baby Gap pants. (I can't bring myself to pay Gap prices for something he will wear for such a short time!) They have the elastic on the inside that you can adjust with buttons like some maternity pants have. We get them because he is so skinny and most pants that are the right length fall off of him... although back in the day of the cloth diapers we had the opposite problem. You could check out those ans see if they work. I think there are a few other brands that have the elastic in them too, maybe Gymboree? Also I had to dress Brady in girls pants one time and they fit him way better, I think they make them skinnier than boys pants. You could try a pair of boys plain jeans and maybe they would work (no one would know at this age).

We have gotten some hand me downs from my MIL and some of them are just as funny! I think my MIL was going to bring you some of the outfits that she had that you used to wear when you had your shower, but didn't for some reason :) I think the red overalls with the chicken takes the cake though. You do call her chicken so maybe they are fitting ;)

  5. Laura - I seriously think we should make our own line of clothing - Clothes for the Cloth Diapered (and huskier) Child. I swear all Charlie wears are sweats (the Jumping Beans brand from Kohl's are fairly roomy and inexpensive!)

  6. My mom gave me the little rabbit jacket that I wore as a baby. It's LIGHT pastel blue and has bunny ears. I have a son. He will not be wearing it.

  7. OMG, that red outfit had me dying laughing at my desk!!! Hilarious. We buy a LOT of gymboree clothes and they fit great. My daughter who is also breastfeed is on the thicker side too, but now that she is walking all over she is really thinning out abd she is longggg. But I totally suggest you trying gymboree, and their clothes DONT fade!!! My daugther also has that same carters outfit bella has on. That red outfit still has me laughing...

  8. Ally - Pffft!

Heather - Your spelling looks pretty good to me!:)

BB - Good ideas. I went to Baby Gap once and freaked out at the $24 price tag on the jeans. Regarding the clothes from your MIL/my aunt. I bet there are pics of Jason in those duds and me in the chicken suit in an old photo album somewhere!

Katie - Let's include Jumbo Bumbos and bigger BabyLegs in our new line!

Zerodoll- Hahaha. Did your Mom ask why he wasn't in it for Easter?

MommiCourtney-I will definitely have to check out Gymboree since both you and Brady Balouga mentioned it.

  10. Katie - It's just a regular old adult wig from Party Warehouse that we bought for Husband's high school football player Halloween costume years ago. And yes, it does make for great (albeit slightly cruel) good times with a baby :)
