Bumpdate: 18 Weeks

Due Date: July 2, 2011. 22 weeks to go!

Weight Gain: +7.5 lbs. I managed to put on an additional 2 pounds in the days between my last post and my midwife appointment last Friday. The insane rate of weight gain is both baffling and irritating to me and I was hoping to avoid gaining too much weight again this pregnancy. [Edited to add: I have no issue with gaining 7.5 lbs so far. I do have concerns about gaining over 6 lbs in under two weeks, though! I fear the trajectory that I might be on...] I do think I identified one factor - I dramatically cut back on nursing recently. As in, I reduced it from over 45 minutes spent nursing each day to only 5 minutes. And therein lays a potential too-fast weight gain problem. So I am dietitian-ing myself this week and set three goals: keep food records, limit caloric beverages to 1-2 per week (no more long-neck grapefruit Izze's at night for me...woe), and really enjoy one dessert each day. Really enjoy are the operative words for that last one - the goal is to pass on snacking on little bits of treats during the day and save up my dessert allotment for something I really want and can take the time to enjoy. I will also be mindful of that dessert portion size and portion sizes in general. Boom! I charged myself $60 for the 30 minute consultation.

Symptoms
: Feeling really good aside from little gripes that come up here and there (rhinitis, headaches, backpain).

What's different this time: I keep forgetting about the pregnancy now that I feel fine. I won't remember until I go to bend all the way over and have a uterus in the way. And then it's a little weird. Ha.

Cravings/Aversions: I WANT MORE DIET COKE AND I CAN'T HAVE IT.

Sleep: Pretty good last week.

I am loving:The fact that I am following through on my organization goals for 2011. Husband thinks it's extreme nesting. Whatever it is, it is bringing me (and Husband, too) such a sense of peace and contentment when we are at home. (I'm sorry I said "peace and contentment", but they were the best words to describe it.)

I miss: Having a metabolism slightly slower than the speed of light while I was breastfeeding frequently (or really, I miss living in the land of endless dessert & treats).

I am looking forward to: FRIDAY, FRIDAY, FRIDAY! A.k.a. the day we get to see the baby on the ultrasound. I think that will really make me feel more connected to Baby 2.0.

I'm spazzing about: The weight thing a little.

Best moment this week: I need to keep this in mind during the week because I never remember anything big when it comes time to fill this out. I'll just say that last week was an overall pretty good week.

Milestones: Weight worries. SUPER!

Movement: Yes. I'm looking forward to stronger and more regular movement.

It's a...: I'll let you all know very soon.

Exercise: I get an 80% for my goal last week as I completed 4 workouts (run/walk, two fast walks, prenatal yoga), but I'm going to cut myself slack on not getting 100% as I had a couple bad headache days where I opted to rest instead.  I am feeling much more in the swing of things with activity and anticipate that motivation should not be much of a problem in the near-ish future.

Diet: Fine, but need to cut back on portion sizes and also the "extras" like Izze drinks and such. I did not meet my diet coke/coke zero goal as I managed to find all sorts of opportunities to have one. Very tricky, Laura. Must keep working on it.

Goals for the upcoming week: Going to do the same as last week: workout 5 times and limit diet coke to two/week.

Belly Shot:
Look! A haircut after a zillion months. And even more exciting: I will FINALLY be getting my hair colored in the next few weeks. The last time that happened? Months ago - as in last Spring or something. Not that you can tell from the 8 inches of roots or anything...

  1. I can totally relate to the diet coke cravings. I love a really cold diet coke in a can. My husband seems to think that diet coke is the worst thing I can possibly drink, but it's one of the few things that settles my stomach and doesn't cause heartburn. I need to work on limiting my intake though.

  2. Ohhh coke zero, how I love thee. I let myself have one a day while prego- Bad! Is one a day moderation?? Doubt it...you're 2 a week sounds much more moderate. Don't get down about the weight thing- I had a 10 pound weight gain goal by 20 weeks for myself and I thought that was pretty reasonable. You look great!

  3. Diana - Reg coke would help me w/nausea for some reason. You gotta do what you gotta do right? But Husband also views diet coke/coke zero as the worst thing ever. He is very anti-caffeine. Booooooo!

katie -I probably should have been more clear that I have no issues about gaining 7.5 lbs at this point. That's totally normal weight gain. My fear is more that I'll get going on a 2 lb/week weight gain with this pregnancy. I did that last time and gained around 55 lbs. I lost it all so it's not a huge deal, but I know I'll be much more comfortable at the end and postpartum if I can avoid gaining double the rec amount! Oh - and I was having at least one if not more diet coke a day recently...a little out of control!

  4. you and i should swap tastebuds, friend. diet coke (and all fake sugar things, for that matter) literally taste like poison to me.

i have no idea how, but i cracked cc from his 6-pack-a-day habit a few years ago. he of course filled the hole with more coffee, but for some reason in my head that felt better. hmm.

(do you hate real coke? and if so -- HOW? it is delicious and perfect.)

  5. I am with you on the whole strange weight gain during pregnancy. I would not gain weight for weeks and then suddenly I would gain like 8 pounds in a week. It worked out though because I stayed in the range and only gained 28 pounds. Maybe you will be lucky to have a random/sporadic weight gain and only gain the recommended 25-35 pounds.

P.S. Your hair cut is really cute. :o)

  6. I would say that you finally look a little pregnant! Teeny bump! 7.5 lbs is NOTHING! But I know what you mean about stressing about the big jump in numbers. I found that some weeks I would gain nothing or even lose a pound, but then the next week I would gain 4 lbs! It all seems to even out in the end. I think I'm going to end up gaining around the same as I did with my first (35 lbs) even though at the start of my pregnancy, I was hoping to be closer to the 25 lbs range. Oh well...I'm not about to start dieting now!
Can't wait to hear the big gender reveal this week!!

  7. BJA - Diet pop (specifically diet coke & diet mountain dew - a total no-no in our house due to the yellow #5 it contains) is my one lingering diet food. I can't explain it. I do sugar in my coffee, regular syrup on waffles & in lattes and yet I prefer diet coke over regular anyday. I will drink Coke on occasion, though. I really think it comes down to a need to rebel. And that is where picking up smoking might come in really handy if I want to crack this diet-coke addiction.

Katie/Mama Tully - I gained 8-9 lbs for 3 months in a row during my last pregnancy and I never once had a week where I didn't gain - so I guess I'm just worried about history repeating itself! I also now wonder if the tone of this bumpdate makes me sound weight obsessed. I swear I'm not! I just can't forget what happened last time!

  8. It doesn't make you sound weight obsessed. I too would be shocked to gain that much in one week, but seeing as how you have cut back on breastfeeding, Its understandable. I think its great you now have a baby bump LOL. So cute! Is it bad that I have one like yours, but I'm only 14 weeks with my first LOL? Since I've gotten pregnant, I can't stand diet cokes. they make me gag. I can only drink regular. I'm bad bad momma, I drink one a day. I can't help myself :(. Ok, and one question. Why are those things a no-no because of Yellow #5. Is it because of the color, or something bad about it?

  9. Stephanie - I'm sure Husband would be far more OK w/me having one reg coke a day than one diet coke a day!

So the yellow #5 thing - it and all artificial colors & flavors (including aspartame, the sweetener in diet coke) fall into the GRAS category, which stands for Generally Recognized As Safe. In other words, they've been around long enough and they have not been proven harmful the FDA calls them safe. However, yellow #5 has been shown to be cancer causing in animals (and I think even aspartame has also been shown to cause problems in animals if given in crazy-excessive doses) and it's one of those things that Husband really, really does not like me to have. I do let myself still have a diet mt dew on occasion, but limit it and most other yellow #5 foods (which includes crazy things like Life cereal and Doritos). Um...guessing that was a little more info than what you were looking for! Haha.

  10. WOW! I totally did not know that! I'm gonna have to start paying more attention LOL. Oh and wasn't more info than what I was looking for. It wasn't the answer I was expecting, but I am always game for learning any and all info from others. They know more about different things than I do...But thanks for telling, otherwise I would go about eating my 2 bowls of captain crunch every day LOL. (I should probably cut back on that then too huh. I have a lot to learn apparently)
