Hodge Podge + $20 Starbucks Giveaway

  • Sorry I left you hanging on the house update! Life has been nonstop for me since Friday, but here's the scoop: We looked at it again and I/we loved it again. Want, want, want. I would have loved to rush getting the offer in, but there truly hasn't been time because Husband had to take off for a business trip Saturday night after going to both Bella's recital in the afternoon and my friend's wedding in the evening. Toooooo busy. We are hoping to make an offer on Friday or Saturday this week. This feels like light years away and I'm panicky someone else will beat us to the punch, but I'm hoping it all works out. And maybe it's good that I'm forced to have a bit of restraint and think it over. Less slutty.
  • I kinda forgot to share a major criteria for our house hunt: school districts! That was actually our #1 search criteria, followed by cost, 3+ bedrooms, 2+ bathrooms, garage, 0.25+ acres, etc. So I left all of the most important stuff off that list that I posted last week.
  • Here is a little sneak peak of the yard for the house. Look at that! A lake. It's not safe for swimming, but you can canoe and kayak and jet-ski and stuff on it. I say that all casual like I've ever jet-skied in my life.
  • Let's talk about Bella's recital some more.  She almost didn't get to go because she was sick with a fever for a few days last week (random) and had already missed the dress rehearsal. But by Saturday she seemed to be well and I was so relieved that she would get to participate. Now, had I realized the insanity of this recital weekend, I don't think I would have signed her up, but in the end it was pretty darn cute and Bella really enjoyed herself...for the most part. But can I just say that having to put a 3-year-old's short hair into a tight bun full of hairspray and bobby pins made me want to weep? Tantrum city. And then there was the fact that three of us moms had to keep 9 little ballerina's entertained and out of trouble backstage for TWO HOURS prior to their 2 minute performance. This included corralling them into a tiny hallway for most of the time, except when it was a snack or potty break. Lordy, this was exhausting. I can't imagine being a daycare provider. Granted, they don't have to keep the kids in a pristine state, but still. A lot of work! We won't sign up at this particular studio again next year, but for the most part it was a good experience for Bella. She learned a ton and also got to practice things like taking turns, patience, social cues (i.e. you cannot randomly attack your classmates in a bear hug whenever you feel like it). I'm pretty proud of my little pumpkin and am so bummed that I forgot my nice camera both days and missed the chance to videotape during the dress rehearsal.

  • On the flip side, that girl can be sooooo exhausting sometimes. Bella has stayed very consistent with her pattern of adopting an entirely new and slightly demonic personality while Husband is out of town. Bizarro Bella is the most challenging Bella of them all. I can barely get us out of the house due to tantrum landmines hidden left and right. I try to give her so much extra attention and hugs and stuff to offset the behavior, because I know it's because she is having a tough time with her dad gone, but it's just not enough. Husband cannot get back soon enough. Travel will be minimal for the next couple months, THANK GOD.
  • Right now Oliver is protesting his nap in a pack and play in my bedroom while Bella is protesting her nap in the kid's bedroom. I don't blame Oliver - pack and plays are the worst and he is not a tiny little baby :( Project Share a Bedroom has remained one big failure for our household. They constantly wake each other up. So I've been dealing by having Oliver do the pack and play in my bedroom for his afternoon nap and then Bella sleeps in our bed with us at night. And if Bella & Husband are snoring from illness, then I opt to sleep in the hallway. NEED TO MOVE NOW NOW NOW OMFG.
  • Oh wait, I think they are both sleeping. I should do numbers 1-52 on my to-do list, but wouldn't a nap be lovely? I think so. Or maybe I'll read the biography of Steve Jobs that I treated myself to as a "you are surviving solo parenting" gift.  I'm not too far into it and so far he seems...um...unpleasant.
  • Speaking of books, I bought Shades of Gray. Dullsville. I'm giving up after only a few chapters. The main male character seems pretty much the opposite of sexy to me. So instead of being like, "Ooh! This is kinky good fun!" I'm thinking more, "Yuck! Get out of there! He's creepy!" Not surprising since I have always been Team Jacob vs. Team Edward.
  • I will be doing a sponsored post next week and that makes me feel mildly twitchy so I thought I'd give away a $20 Starbucks gift card to assuage my guilt and also just for some summer fun :) I want you all to know that I am quite picky about what sponsored posts I do because I want it to fit in very well with my blog. So that means I say no to most offers, including offers like a beer one recently (much to Husband's dismay when I mentioned it). The one that I will be doing next week was too fun to pass up, but still feels a wee bit pimpy. (Pimpy? Can that be a word?) Anyway, if you want a chance to win some moola for Starbucks, just leave a comment by Friday, June 8 at midnight CST. Feel free to say whatever you like in your comment, but if you want a prompt then how about you tell me what you would like to be drinking right now. Could be anything from anywhere, not just from good old 'Bucks. Me? An iced coffee would be divine. Especially if it was in the backyard of my shiny new-to-me house :)

  1. Mmm Starbucks!! I just tried the Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino® Blended Beverage the other day and I would love another one right about now.

I actually pulled through the drive-thru and asked for it as "Skinny". The second I said that I knew it sounded ridiculous. Even the drive-thru guy hesitated and said "that would diminish it". So I just got it with non-fat milk. I have to trick myself into thinking it's somewhat healthy, right? :)

  2. A LAKE?! That's amazing!! The woods behind our house can get pretty swamp-like during the rainy spring months...that's probably as close to water as we'll ever get. I grew up on the water (ocean all year and lake during the summers) so I miss living on the water like CRAZY! But realistically, I don't think we will ever be able to afford waterfront property around here :(
Bella looks so adorable in her recital outfit! I can't wait for L to start dance classes. Right now they are all mommy & me until age 3, which doesn't work when you have 1.5 year old tagging along, so I'm hoping to sign her up this fall once she's 3.
I'm surprised you don't like 50 Shades of Gray! I mean, it's no classic, for sure, but I couldn't put it down! And it was great for the ol' marriage, if you know what I mean ;) I do know what you mean about him being super creepy though, lol! I just tried to picture him as Ryan Gosslin because he generally get's me all hot and bothered.
Looking forward to seeing who the mystery sponsor is next week!

  3. School district is one of our top criteria too, so important and we failed this with our current house :( but that was before kids so it seemed so far away, now we sit thinking about making the move again. Good luck with the house it sounds great and the lake is even better!

  5. I hope that you get the house! And how cute does Bella look in a tutu? I don't envy you the job of keeping the kids neat and quiet back stage though!

My drink of choice would be a raspberry mojito that I have marked on Pinterest. I would make it with the rum I don't have and sip it on our lovely wrap around porch that doesn't exist. :-)

  6. Ohh you will LOVE living by a lake. I live within a block of one and I can hear the boats and jet ski's on it all the time, its so peaceful.

As for what I would love to be drinking? Anything alcoholic. Haven't had a drink in about 2 years, and I think I'm due :) You better believe I'm going to have a SOMETHING at my husband's birthday party next month (after Leigha goes to sleep of course ;) )

  7. The yard looks awesome! I hope it all works out!
I hear ya with Bella's behavior! That's how my girl is doing right now. The good news for us is that we might close on the house next week, which means we might be back with Daddy within the next two weeks. Oh I hope so because the tantrums are killing me!

  8. I can't wait to hear more about this house and where it is!!! We just started talking about where we want to by a house in the F-M area, even though it won't be for a while. I'm so excited for you!

My mother-in-law is reading 50 Shades of Grey and this is one of my favorite things she's ever said, "Let's just call it what it is- S&M porn. Good porn (then she winked at me and my friend) but still porn!"

You are not alone with having a demon kid at times. Olivia is driving us insane with her tantrums that make no sense and nothing works to keep them from happening or stop them. Ugh.

  9. I just drank some Kombucha out on the front porch while Jane is napping and it was lovely. I think I could substitute any beverage or activity in front of "while Jane was napping" and it would be lovely though!

  10. I LOVE LOVE your reaction to 50 Shades of Grey! Literally every woman I know is reading it, and raves about it. I read it and all I could think was she must be crazy to want to be with him, and I also feel like he is manipulative and semi-abusive. not hot at all! based on an instagram pic from Molly/These Little Moments, I started reading a Kristin Hannah book and like it WAY better. Anyway, as for what I'd like to be drinking....I just finished a diet mountain dew in my office, which was not the greatest idea. I would rather have an ice blended chai from The Coffee Bean. yummmmm

  11. I hate room sharing. With a passion. Oh and to be honest, I would love to be drinking a Summer Shandy right now :)

  12. Um, we just bought a house and I really don't know a lot about the school districts... possible parenting fail? I know there's a good parochial school nearby, though, and we aren't treating this as our forever home, so there's that.

I would like to be drinking an iced coffee on the deck of our new-to-us house that has been magically painted and moved in to and unpacked.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I would love to be drinking a nice cold coke right now (fountain) but I know it would keep me up tonight :(

Room sharing is scary business. I was just discussing this with someone over the weekend - her kids are 1.5 and 3. She told me they have had several poop flinging incidents. I didn't want the details.

  14. You make me want to be a better blogger. That is a damn fine lake. I so hope y'all get the house. We are trying to sell ours and I am going fifty shades of crazy trying to keep it"show ready." ...although id take a house over a gaggle of toddlers any day. A drink? Vodka. Yeah.. just vodka.

  15. Nice lake! Can't wait to see more pictures of the house, being a local, I'm really curious what suburb you guys chose!

If I had to choose a drink right now it would be a nice large coke zero.. because I'm working. Last night between the hours of 11:30-1:30 when Jake decided to just hang out and be awake, I would have loved a nice cold blended raspberry margarita. I will be indulging on this later this week when my husband is off for the night and I'm having a drinking night... ok, I'm nursing and haven't drank in a few years, so it will likely be a "drink" night not a "drinking" night, but I can talk big, right?

  16. Don't feel bad, as long as it's something you truly like and endorse. I like when people tell about products that they actually USE and why. I pretty much ONLY drink water but when I choose something else, it's usually hot herbal tea. I like fruity kinds, apple cinnamon, or peach ginger! And at church I splurge and have a mug of Irish Breakfast tea!

  17. oh my gosh, seriously, we have Liv in ballet and her recital is on the 16th and it's the same thing with the backstage moms and such. Except, included in her pristine ballerina bun is blue eyeshadow, mascara, blush, and red lipstick (all requirements!). I have had to do it twice now for pictures and a classroom dress rehearsal and I'm super unimpressed by it all. They are two and it seems a bit extreme to make them wear make-up. I am boycotting the eyeliner though, so I feel like a rebel....they should try putting eyeliner on a two year old who can't "nicely" shut her eyes! GAH, my MIL is making her do this ballet thing, so I'm thinking I might put a stop to it next year.

  18. I would like to be drinking lemonade, but that would require it to be 80+ degrees and sunny out, so I could swing in my imaginary hammock. Instead it's 50 and rainy and I have no hammock. Sigh.

I like the frozen blended coffee drinks, and just discovered that the frozen caramel at Panera is Delicious!

  19. I'd like a margarita, on ice with salt. It's been a long time since alcohol (almost 3 months postpartum right now...) Since I'm still not having any alcohol, I'd settle for a Coke Zero!

  20. Roscoe sleeps in his bed upstairs. Merritt sleeps in our king bed in our room. Andy used to sleep in a chair, and I used to sleep on the couch next to the chair, but we recently realized that we both fit (pretty comfortably!) on the couch in the front room and so that is our new sleeping arrangement. We've only been in this house for 8 months and I'm already counting down...only 16 more to go!! Er...

Anyway, the sleep situation needs to be addressed around here one way or the other.

B is so super cute, I want to see more about her recital!! I can only imagine the backstage crazy. 2 hours. omg.

For me: Iced coffee with extra milk

  21. I totally agree on shades of gray. Creepo shudder

  22. I'm excited about this house for you! Hope it all works out. I wish I was drinking a chai right now :)

  23. I would be drinking an iced chai latte. I hope the house works out for you.

  24. Water...weird I know. But I just had ice cream and now I'm thirsty. Schools were an afterthought for us, as was a large kitchen and all bedrooms on one level. Oh well, now we are stuck and learning to love our split level haven.

  25. I would love a large mocha right about now...I think I may need a permanent caffeine IV, as lately I've been up 'til 2am doing homework, get maybe 5 hrs sleep, then up around 7am with my 5month old, 4 year old and 14 year old. Ahhh, the joys of parenthood LOL.
We've been looking for a house as well and school district is huge for me. I'd like to keep the kids here b/c it's an amazing district but there's not many options out there right now. It will happen when it's supposed to. Good Luck!

  26. My uncle's iced tea...he's a fabulous chef and makes this excellent cinnamony apple mango tea that is soooo good!

  27. Pimpy is absolutely a word. Now. At my house. Well, not when my children are around, but I plan to try it out as The Man's new nick name. A) great blog 2) I like coffee and any kind, but I would be drinking a grande brewed Verona with steamed milk and mucho hazelnut, and D) pick me.

  28. Yeaaa, thanks for the update on the house. The yard looks amazing. Seeing stuff like these makes me want to move out of California, sort of. I would love to be drinking, hmmmm. Dont tell buxs, but I would like a large vanilla nonfat Latte from Peets right now. But I will settle for my coffee. Bla....So excited to hear about the house stuff, and OMG my daughter has curls like Bella and FML if I EVER had to do a bun like that, she would be a nightmare!!! She barely lets me comb it!!!!!

  30. really on the 50 shades? The first book I do agree he was a total ass. Second one he comes around a little bit.. (OMG horrible word choice but I don't feel like changing it) and I'm reading it just cause I got it for free. I hear by the third book I "won't want to let them go" but maybe all these other women are just letting their sexual tension do the talking? ha!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'd like a nice cold fountain diet mountain dew. Since I haven't had a single pop in over a month, an iced chai tea sounds pretty good too :-)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love iced and hot chai lattes. Thank you! lynne at fairpoint dot net

  33. School's out! It's summer! I can drink anything I want! But a caramel frappuccino would be lovely. :)

  34. You're a DANCE MOM. Weird. But fun!

Um...I'm dying over your backyard. We are thinking about moving to the Cities and I'm very curious about which 'burb you are looking at.

Aaaaaand I'd have a iced venti sweetened green tea. Or black. I like them both. :0)

  35. Love your blog! I would love a blended iced vanilla latte right now.

  38. I read the first 50 Shades book last week and it was AWFUL. I kept thinking, why does she even want to talk to this guy??? And the writing, oh the writing is just SO BAD.
