The Story of Us

I am writing this from a hotel bathroom at 3:30 AM in the morning. On this night away from the kids, I am up for no good reason at all, other than the fact that my body forgot how to sleep since having children.

But it's all good because I can fall back to sleep soon enough and then SLEEP IN! And order room service! And take a dip in the pool! Because I'm at a hotel! Hooray!

Why am I in the bathroom like a creeper? Well, because husband is here with me. We are celebrating our five year wedding anniversary and it is the first time we are getting away together in a year. So that deserves a caps-locked HOORAY!

For his anniversary gift this year, Husband requested that I not spend much money on him. He tends to not want gifts, just cards. But I wanted something more than just a card to mark this occasion.

So what to give? As I pondered this question in the past few weeks, an answer formed in my head as we sat in a theater watching Twilight. During the love montage highlighting the love story of the worlds most famous vampires, he reached over and grabbed my hand. I knew what he was thinking. He was thinking about us and where we started and how far we have come and how turning me into a vampire was so worth it in the end.

I used every spare second to comb through memories this past week and then create our love story as it has been thus far on iMovie. I'm really happy with how it turned out and if I thought he was verklempt during the Twlight montage, well I can officially say he was truly overcome while watching this video. I don't know if I'll be able to top this gift in future years.

  5. Oh Laura,

You're hilarious and I love that you're so willing to share so much of yourself on this blog. I'm often laughing out loud while reading your posts and, naturally, Husband asks what about and I choke out paragraphs through laughter and he gives me that look like "You know you don't know this person, right?"

You're family is GORGEOUS. Your photos, wedding, births, family and others are all so lovely.

Thank you for sharing, and HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

  6. I never comment, but that was so cute!!! I loved it. It made me want to learn how to make one. For about two minutes, then I quit. I'll just watch yours.

  10. Amazing video!! My favorite part was when you teased about having big news for him again....ha ha ha ha. My heart stopped for a second so I'm sure husband's did, too! Love this so much .Made me mushy enough to give my own husband a big hug after I watched it. I'm sure he was confused. ;)

  11. Wow Laura. I'm speechless at how to describe how truly incredible that video/gift is! Like others, I both laughed and cried and had my heart swell with joy. Kudos to you to make something so touching to affect a sorta stranger. Happy Anniversary to you and A!

P.S. The cynic in me should also admit that when I first saw the video time of 11:34, I thought to myself, "That is LONG. I'll just watch the first part until I get bored." That should teach me a lesson for judging - I was riveted the whole time (especially when I really thought you were going to announce another pregnancy)!! :-)

  12. Seriously, wow. I've been reading your blog for almost a year - I went through alllll your love story posts while I was pregnant with our son, and was riveted. This just made me so happy! Beautiful.

I just moved to the US from Canada, and started my own blog - mostly because I LOVE your day-in-the-life series, and want to remember this time with my kids. I'll for sure participate in the spring:)

  14. Good God Laura, this video makes me want to go smooch on my husband something fierce. And I'm pretty freaking tired these days and don't get those sexy feelings very often. But now I'm all emotional and thankful and nostalgic and have so many of the FEELINGS!

Love this so much, love you and A's love.

He is screwed, can never top this amazing gift.

  15. As a woman who is now 8 days past her due date (coincidence?) and up in the middle of the night, this may not have been the best choice for me to watch. I did the ugly cry- very a la watching Love Story for the first time. Weeping sob- I think I frightened the dog.

Beautiful job- and thank you for reminding me that I really need to take more pictures of my husband and I together. . .

  16. That was amazing! I can't believe you put that together, I wouldn't know where to start! But, so amazing to have all those memories in one place. And... I've now seen that video of you telling Husband about being pregnant with Oliver three or maybe four times, but I cry every single time I see it! So beautiful, I love his reaction!

  17. Your videos kill me every time. I don't think I ever saw the video where you told your husband about Oliver, so that was a fun surprise. You seriously have the most beautiful family ever, and I love how you guys can be goofy together (especially when dancing, heh). Happy anniversary!

  18. That was totally amazing...best anniversary video EVER. You have a beautiful family!! Happy fifth anniversary!

P.S. The "Do you know what else I'm going to tell you???" after the part about your baby announcement...SO FUNNY!

  20. This was fantastic. As another W&M grad, I've been wondering if you guys had the Crim Dell kiss. Glad to know there was a photo on record! :)

  21. Thank you everyone! I appreciate you commenting!

Erin - I would have had 7 days to work on it instead of 5 but I was super annoyed at A. last weekend so I didn't want to do it. Haha. C'est la marriage!

Diana - Um, yeah, I would have a similar reaction towards an 11 minute video on other blogs :) And in the making of it, 11 minutes was a hard trim. It's so painful cutting out stuff left and right but I would rather the story stay concise and flowing. Otherwise I think my videos would be around 20 hours or so.

andthencameforty - Canada to Miami? CULTURE SHOCK! I'll check out your blog, thanks for sharing link :)

MaggStar - I so thought of you when I was doing that pregnancy part. You'll experience the new love for your man very soon! And do take more photos. Or everything. Even, or maybe most importantly, the boring everyday stuff.

Anonymous - This is probably rhetorical but here's my short answer. Step 1: gather data (review all photos and pull out the most potential ones, scan through videos and note potentials) Step 2: put video & photos into movie software Step 3: Add music in approx locations (I note music that makes me weepy throughout the year and keep a list so then I'm ready with what I want at go time) Step 4: Add title slides Step 5: Edit, edit, edit (I cut a ton of video, many pictures and watch it over and over to smooth out timing and sound levels) I have taught myself through doing it again and again and relying heavily on the "help" option of iMovie and using lots of googling. But the biggest part is that I think it's fun to get super detailed. I can very much see that playing around with tiny bits of sound levels would not appeal to many!

Laura - Nice eye! So Husband swears he has never kissed a woman there until me. And dude was a player in college. I say it's possible he just doesn't remember, but the sentiment is nice :)

  25. I love it! So, my anniversary is in July. I'll send the pics, you make the video. Deal? :) Somehow, I don't think it would mean quite as much to my man.

  26. That was amazing! Such a sweet video, thanks for sharing those precious moments. Great love stories like yours make me believe in marriage. Also, you have amazing hair, totally jealous of those locks!

  27. Awwww, that's just the loveliest. Like another commentor, it makes me feel all schmoopy about my husband (til he comes home to annoy me - ha!). My 10th anniversary is in the spring and I wish I had the skillz to make something like this.

Also? That video of your husband learning about Oliver's impending arrival is just the best. Kudos to you for making an effort to document that. And kudos to your husband for no bad language :)

Happy 5 years to you guys and here's to 50 more.
